Elaine Ann Andersen, daughter of Adolph and Louise (Kay) Schnack, was born on March 7, 1922, in rural Walnut, Iowa. She attended Fairview #1, #6, and Center #8 country schools. Elaine’s family moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she attended Harlan High School for two years. On January 31, 1940, Elaine married Marvin Edward Andersen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. The couple farmed in Shelby County for many years before moving to Kimballton, Iowa, in 1979. Elaine became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, in 2012.

Elaine was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, where she was active in the Ladies’ Circle. She had enjoyed working several part time jobs in Kimballton. Elaine was the treasurer of the Progressive Danes in Kimballton and served on the Corley Community Club Board for many years. She was also a Polk Township Get-Together Club member. Elaine liked participating in a number of activities, including playing cards, fishing, crocheting, baking, polka dancing, and sewing; spending time with family and attending family gatherings were special times for her.

Elaine A. Andersen died on Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having reached the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 24 days.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Andersen, on May 21, 1999; two grandsons, Todd Custer and Brett Andersen; one sister, Viola Andersen; one brother, Earle Schnack; and one son-in-law, Tom Custer. She is survived by five daughters, Margaret (Dennis) Backhaus of Westside, Iowa, Darlene (Tom) West of Kimballton, Iowa, Pat Custer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Judy (Duane) Deist of Audubon, Iowa, and Joyce (Merlene) Ostebee of Audubon, Iowa; one son, Ed (Vickie) Andersen of Kirkman, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, with Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating. Peggy Doonan served as the organist, and Kristin Backhaus was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were David Backhaus, Rodney Backhaus, Mike Custer, Brian Andersen, Aaron Ostebee, Kenny Deist, Tricia Custer, Lynette Gladman, Shari Lewis, Tamie Fahn, Megan Andersen, Tessa Tiner, B ridget Cunningham, Amber Ostebee, Kari Wolfe, Kristy Ringel, Sasha Backhaus, Nicholas Backhaus, Sarah Backhaus, Benjamin Backhaus, Emily Backhaus, Jessica Backhaus, Larissa Backhaus, Amanda Backhaus, Bo Gladman, Adam Gladman, MaKayla Gladman, Taylor Lewis, Dylan Lewis, Amber Hunter, Samuel Andersen, Wyatt Fahn, Asher Andersen, Cole Fahn, Abigail Ringel, Harlee Fahn, Megan Ringel, Ian Cunningham, Mayson Custer, Aayden Cunningham, Owen Custer, Anna Cunningham, Nolan Custer, Elayna Cunningham, Halle Ostebee, and Macy Vanderhoof.
