His wife was Marian Cuthbertson, and his family consisted of four sons and three daughters. The first-born was John Jr, who opened his eyes to the light in Scotland on 17 Jun 1803, and who grew to manhood in his native land. He was married there to Janet B Miller, whose mother was a cousin of the famous poet, Robert Burns. She was born 28 Jan 1809 and died in Sept 1877.
