Orris G. Nordhougen was born July 26, 1901 in Aneta to Carl & Hannah Bue Nordhougen. He moved to Leeds with his parents & graduated from Leeds High School. He attended NDSU & married Alvida Anderson Jan. 15, 1923 in Leeds. He & his father developed a drought-resistant wheat, Nordhougen Durum, in the 1930's. He was involved with the lumber business, grain elevators & implement & auto dealerships. He was also president & director of Northers Founders Insurance Co. in Bismarck.
He served in the ND Senate for 12 years, representing Benson County & was the Non-Partisan League candidate for the Republican nomination to the US Congress in 1952 & the Republican candidate for US Congress in 1954. He served on the Leeds Lutheran Church Council & the Leeds City Council for many years. He was a member of the Leeds Masonic Lodge, the El Zagel Shrine, the Elks Lodge & the Eagles Aerie.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Curtis & his wife Esther of Moorhead; 4 grandchildren; & 2 sisters, Cora Medhus of Portland, Ore. & Gladys Spoklie of Lancaster, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Truman Nordhougen.
