Matt "Sonny" Vertin Jr, 80, of Ely, died Monday, October 20, 2014, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
He was born February 22, 1934, in Ely, to Matt and Angela (Zupancich) Vertin, and was a lifelong Ely resident.
Sonny was married for 62 years to Gloria (DeBernardi), and they owned and operated Vertin's Cafe and Pub, a local iconic establishment in Ely.
During the years of operating the restaurant, he employed many people from the surrounding area and always strived for everyone to reach their highest potential. Sonny could be found at the restaurant at any time of the day sitting at his table with a coffee cup and always ready to give his opinion or stock trading tips.
He was also instrumental in the creation of Canadian Waters, Ely Golf Course, Northern Terrace Trailer Park and the Hidden Valley Ski complex. Sonny was very proud of his community and always wanted to see continued growth and development and would help in any way he could. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time doing yard work, reading and visiting and having coffee with friends.
He is survived by his wife Gloria; daughters, Marie (Matt) Baudek, Diane (Frank Guldbrandsen), Kathy (Ed) Erchul, Anne (Dennis) Portinen, and JoAnne (Bob) Franklin; grandchildren, Nick, Melissa, Ashley, Brian, Alex, Taylor, Lauren, Shelby, Mathew and Gianna; great-grandchildren, Christina, Aiden, Mariah and Easton; brother, Anthony (Jean) Vertin; aunt, Margaret (Albert) Zupancich; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Angela Vertin; sister, Veronica Clark; and son Mathew (Matty).
Burial will be in the Ely Cemetery.
