Violet Louisa Richardson, was the daughter of Watson Reed Richardson and Eliza Jane Cameron. She married John S. Karns on March 29, 1885 in Benton Township, Missouri. Together they had three children, Mable M. Karns, Gladie Dillon Karns and James Kally Karns. The family came by covered wagon to Hotchkiss, Colorado around 1894. Shortly thereafter John passed away and Violet sold their wagon and team of horses to purchase her husband's headstone. After her husband's death she returned to Missouri.

In February of 1895 Edward DeGraffenried traveled to Missouri for Violet and they were married on February 28, 1895 in Rockport, Missouri. They came back to the North Fork Valley and homesteaded on Black Mesa. Together they had four children, Edward Otis DeGraffenried, Joseph H. DeGraffenried, Frances Emily DeGraffenried Starkovich and Bernice Freeman DeGraffenried Pagone.

They were considered pioneer's of Hotchkiss, Colorado and during their declining years they resided on Rogers Mesa. They remained there until their deaths. They are both buried in the the upper portion of Riverside Cemetery.
