Samuel Ammen descended from a long line of German Ancestry,
representative of which had settled in Lancaster County,Pennsylvania and traveled to the Shenandoah Valley .Samuel Ammen Coffman was born near Fincastle,Virginia.
The Coffman family ranked among the prominent residents of the Shenandoah Valley. His father Jacob Coffman Jr. was a farmer and large land owner, his mother Anna Ammen Coffman also came from a prominent family in Botetourt County, Virginia.
Samuel participated in the Black Horse Calvary
Militia in Virginia as a Bugler.
In 1834 Samuel and his Brother-In-Law Simon Stair took ownership of of Mill Pond Newspaper Business from Simon's father Henry Stair.
Samuel operated mill until 1854. After getting out of the paper mill business ,Samuel wife Mary and the children moved to Kansas in 1855 and located in Jefferson County,where under Territorial Rule,he served as Justice of the Peace and spent the remainder of his life in Kansas .
