Mark Henry "Bop" Dougherty, 55, of Hedgesville, WV, died Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, following a brief illness. Born June 8, 1959 in Detour, Maryland, he was the son of the late Charles and Margaret E. Stitely Dougherty. He was the husband of Susan Smith Dougherty. Mark was a graduate of Walkersville High School. He was employed for over 30 years as an Engineer with the Maryland State Highway Administration. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and family. Also, he loved spending time on his small horse farm tending to his menagerie of animals and he took pride in maintaining a beautiful property. He loved riding his Harley Davidson Road King. Most importantly, he gave a hundred percent in everything he did. . Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses, Jason P. and Nicole Smith of Wilmington, DE and Jessica E. and Andrew Smith of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Maisie, Canaan and Nora; siblings and spouses, Ronald Dougherty of Taneytown, Harold and Linda Dougherty of Libertytown, Lois and Austin Schroyer of Walkersville, and Stuart Dougherty of Thurmont, and Aunts Louise and Annabelle, amongst other numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro on Saturday, November 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Haugh's Cemetery of Ladiesburg, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to Days End Horse Rescue at 1372 Woodsbine Rd., Woodbine, MD 21797; or to Briggs Animal Adoption Center, 3731 Berryville Pike, Charles Town, WV 25414, or The Brain Aneurysm Foundation, 269 Hanover St., Bldg 3, Hanover, MA 02339.
