William Cumberledge was a Constable in Gray County, Texas, for just one year. He died at the age of 54, in the line of duty. A suspect he had arrested the week before for public intoxication, went to the Constable's home and woke him up. When Constable Cumberledge went outside to speak to the man, the suspect shot him in the side and head, out of retalliation for being arrested.The suspect was located the next day, the suspect shot himself, but survived the wound, and stood trial.
