Leonard Walters, age 81 of Chicopee Village, Gainesville, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at his residence following a brief illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Phil Carpenter will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 16, 2009 from 6 – 9 pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Walters was born on March 17, 1928 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Leonard was a 1948 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Newberry College, Newberry, SC and later in 1955, received his MA for teachers from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. His teaching and coaching career spanned over a 40 year period where he received over 10 Star Teacher awards and was honored with a scholarship in his name for English majors at Johnson High School, Gainesville, GA. He attended Chicopee Baptist Church.
Mr. Walters is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred Cartee Walters, his daughters and their families, Montey Nix & her husband, Alan Nix, their daughters, Caroline Nix and Cady Nix, Toni Mundy & her husband, Tommy Mundy, their daughters, Ansley Mundy Koney & her husband, Misha Konev and Cindy Mundy and her son, Hayden Mundy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are given to Chicopee Baptist Church, 13 First Street, Chicopee, Gainesville, GA 30504.
