PIONEER LAID TO REST
-B.S. Wishard Buried, Nov. 19, Under K.P. Auspices-
B.S. Wishard, the pioneer hotel man and one of Rathdrum's oldest and best known citizens, who was stricken with paralysis Nov. 14, passed away last Friday, Nov. 17, at about one o'clock in the afternoon. Although he displayed great vitality, the unfortunate man failed to rally from the stroke and owing to his advanced age little hope was entertained for his recovery. He remained for the greater part of the time, in an unconscious condition until his death which came peacefully. His devoted wife was with him when he breathed his last. His brother who had been sent for arrived a few moments too late to see him alive.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19, under the auspices of Kootenai Lodge, No. 7, (Coeur d'Alene) Knights of Pythias, of which order the deceased man had long been a member. The members of that lodge were present in a body and were joined by a large number of the members of Panhandle Lodge, No. 13, of Rathdrum. The services were held in the Fraternal hall which was crowded with the brother knights, and friends and neighbors of the departed. Rev. E.A. Walker of the First Presbyterian church of Rathdrum was the officiating minister and preached a sermon replete with lofty sentiments and helpful suggestions. Hymns were rendered by a choir of chosen voices.
A the conclusion of the services the procession took up its way to the cemetery, the knights, in two long lines under Chancellor Commander Wood of Coeur d'Alene, preceding carriages containing the Rathbone Sisters of Syringa Temple No.4 and the Lady Maccabees of Lady Hollister Hive. No. 9, who attended as organizations as a special mark of respect for the bereaved widow who is a member of those two societies. The remains were laid to rest with the beautiful burial ceremony of the Pythian order.
Barton Stowe Wishard was born in Indiana, January 20, 1844. At an early age he crossed the plains locating in Linn county, Oregon, whence he afterwards moved to Idaho where he had resided ever since. He was in the hotel business many years and had numerous mining interests. He was known as a good neighbor, kind husband and father and an order loving citizen.
He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. And by two brothers, and four sisters.
