Major League Baseball Player. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander was a workhorse during his five-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and as a left-handed batter he established himself as one of the best hitting pitchers of his time. He broke in with the Pirates with a 7-4 record in 1928 and followed with two outstanding seasons. He was 16-11 in 1929 with 19 complete games in 28 starts. He then posted a 17-8 record and led the National League with 22 complete games in 29 starts in 1930. He slipped to 9-13 in 1931 but still went the distance 15 times in 21 starts. His lifetime pitching statistics were 52-37, a 4.76 earned run average and an impressive 62 complete games in 92 starts. As a hitter, he batted .310 with 25 RBIs in 1929 and .353 with 20 RBIs in 1930. As a pinch hitter, he was 10 for 21 (.476) in 1929, 6 for 16 (.375) in 1930 and 7 for 21 (.333) in 1931. In all, he was 25 for 70 (.357) as a pinch hitter. His career batting record was .306 with 21 doubles, eight homers, 43 runs scored and 75 RBIs.
