Oak Ridger, The (TN) - Monday, February 20, 2006 Lonnie Carl Nelson Sr. Morgan County native

Lonnie Carl Nelson Sr., age 85, a resident of the Dyllis community of Roane County, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge.
Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Morgan County, moving to Roane County in 1958.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wartburg since 1946. He worked as a millwright and retired from Union Carbide at the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Emma Farmer Nelson; by a granddaughter, Angela Foster; by a brother, Lester Nelson; by sisters-in-law, Alene Nelson of Morgan County, and Ruth Buck of Ohio; and by four brothers-in-law, Edward Griffith, Don Drake, Huston Buck, all of Ohio, and Sam Scott of Morgan County.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen Buck Nelson of the Dyllis community; daughter, Norma Lutrell and husband David of Dyllis; sons, Lonnie Nelson Jr. and wife Wanda of Oak Ridge, Ronnie Nelson and wife Joyce of Dyllis; grandchildren, Bill Galloway and wife Mary of Kingston, Paul Galloway and wife Candi of Knoxville, Carl Nelson and wife Becky of Cosby, David Nelson and wife Christina of London, Ky., Angela Nelson of Knoxville, Thomas Nelson and wife Stacey of Harriman, Anthony Lutrell and wife Cathy of Kingston, and Michael Lutrell of Rockwood; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Leo Nelson and wife Ernestine of Morgan County, and Lloyd Nelson of Mossy Grove; sisters, Glenna Scott of Wartburg, and Anna Drake of Springfield, Ohio; and sister-in-law, Lucy Nelson of Arcanum, Ohio.
He is also survived by special friends, former co-workers, former teachers and present teachers at the Dyllis school, nieces and nephews, and extended family members.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Sonny Works officiating. Burial and graveside services with full military honors will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Roane Memorial Gardens. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
