Company I 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

Enlisted July 16, 1861. Died of disease at Winchester, Va. Nov 4, 1862

The 16th GA Infantry Regiment (also called Sallie Twiggs Regiment) was organized during the summer of 1861. The ten companies were raised in the counties of Columbia, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hart, Jackson, Madison, and Walton (although there were members from other counties). Company I was organized at Gwinnett County, GA by Captain Nathan L Hutchins and was also known as "Hutchins Guards."

"Camp at Fredericksburg Va 19 Jany 1863
Jesse A Atkinson, a private in Captain Hutchins Company (I) of the 16th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers - born in Gwinnett County, Georgia, aged 22 years, dark hair, hazel eyes, 5 feet 10 inches high, and by occupation a Farmer - was enlisted by Adjt James Barrow, at Lawrenceville Georgia on the 16th day of July 1861 to serve for the war - and died of disease at Winchester Virginia on the 4th day of November 1862....."
Signed "N L Hutchins, Capt. Co I 16th Ga Regt"

Affidavit of William E Atkinson dated April 1, 1863 Gwinnett County, GA states that "he is the Father of Jesse A Atkinson, deceased who was a private of Captain N.L. Hutchins, Jr. Company I 16th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers commanded by Col. Goode Bryan in the service of the Confederate States, in the present war with the United States; that the said Jesse A Atkinson entered the service at Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County and State of Georgia on or about the 14th day of July 1861 and died at Winchester, Va of disease on or about the 4th day of November 1862 leaving neither wife or child nor no estate to be administered upon and that he makes this deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the Government of the Confederate States whatever may have been due the said Jesse A Atkinson at the time of his death for pay, bounty, or other allowances for his services."

*Note: cards for this soldier are filed with and intermixed with cards of "Jas R Atkinson" but they are definitely two different individuals.
