Inventor. He was one of the first photographers and made major contributions to the photographic process. He will also be remembered as the holder of the patent which affected the early development of photography in England. He grew up as an only child and was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1822 to 1872, he frequently communicated papers to the Royal Society, many of them on mathematical subjects. At an early period he had began his optical researches, which were to have such important results in conjunction with photography. Often called "the inventor of photography", but in the early days he really shared the honour with the frenchman Louis Daquerre and in England with Thomas Wedgewood (1771-1805; buried at St Mary's church, Tarrant Gunville, Dorset) and Joseph Reade. Talbot's idea of getting permanent "sun pictures" of the projected images of a camera obscura led him to the discovery that paper was made sensitive to light by coating it with iodide and nitrate of silver. Gallic acid was used to bring out the latent image so formed. This so-called Talbottype was the basis of modern photography. His photography, however, has tended to obscure his other skill in mathematics which he early displayed at Cambridge University. He won the Rumford Medal for his photographic discoveries. He was the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions on objects found in the "Nineveh" excavations by Sir Austin Henry Layard (1817-1894).
