Laurie was the eldest daughter of George Dobson and Joyce Anderson Dobson. She grew up in Southern California with her siblings, Ronald and Lisa. After graduating from Chatsworth High School, Laurie studied photography at the Brooke's Institute in Santa Barbara and earned her BA. She drowned in the Feather River on August 20, 1983 while on a gold expedition with friends. Her body was recovered on August 27, 1983 by family members and she was cremated.
