Wayne the son of William E. Whiteley and Theresa G. Whiteley of Wappingers Falls New York enlisted in the US Marine Corps oh September 28 1966 in Albany NY. He arrived in Vietnam on April 15 1967 where he was assigned to and served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of January the 1st Battalion Command Post was located 2 kilometer south of Phu Loc in Thua Tien Province with the subordinate units beginning security operations for the Main Supply route along Highway I between Da Nang and Phu Bai.

On January 6, a squad patrol was searching for a VC sniper near Highway 1 some 2 kilometers east of the Hai Van Bridge and when they moved onto the road the Viet Cong opened fire on the patrol. LCpl Wayne Whiteley was hit and killed by the enemy rifle fire.
