The Rev. Wallace Williams “Rock” Rogers died peacefully in the early morning hours of a cool Oct. 22, 2014, morning at his adopted home of Bethany at Heritage at Lowman in the clay hills of White Rock, South Carolina.

Rock was born in Chester on Sept. 22, 1922, to the Rev. George McCall Rogers Sr. and Ford DeArbra Williams Rogers. Rock’s father was a beloved and revered Southern Baptist preacher who led Bible-believing Baptist congregations throughout South Carolina.

Rock graduated from Williston-Elko High School and went on to graduate from Furman University before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served during the latter stages of World War II.

Returning from the war, he married Francis Ruth Folk from Bamberg. They brought forth a son, Timothy Folk Rogers.

In 1957, Rock answered God’s call to the ministry of the gospel, and he enrolled in the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1959.

Rock served as Minister of Education and Associate Pastor at Druid Hills Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., until he was called to become Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro in 1963.

Rock was later called as Pastor of the Westside Baptist Church in West Columbia, where his ministry continued until his retirement in 1985.

Rock was passionate in his ministry and his belief that God’s love is a gift to all his children. His sermons called for unity and justice for all God’s people.

Rock Rogers was also an avid environmentalist. He was happiest when fishing in South Carolina Lowcountry streams, especially the iconic Edisto River, which he dearly loved.

Rock is survived by his son, Tim; daughter-in-law Mullen Taylor; grandchildren John Franklin Folk Rogers, Lucinda Lee Rogers and Rebecca Page Rogers, and their mother, Page Lonnecker Rogers; and a brother, Jack, of Bennettsville. He was predeceased by his beloved former wife Francis Ruth, brothers George and Robert, and sisters Margaret, Dorothy and Emma Lee. He loved his many nieces and nephews.

Final services will be private.

Donations in honor of Rock’s memory are welcomed to the charity of one’s choice, the Heritage at Lowman in White Rock; the soup kitchen ministry of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia; or Friends of the Edisto at www.edistofriends.org.

The family wishes to express its enduring gratitude to the incredible staff of the Heritage at Lowman for their extraordinarily professional and loving care.
