Harry Shurtleff Durant was born on February 13, 1880 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His parents were William Henry Durant and Catherine Ann Brown (she was born in Cavan, Ireland and came over to the United States during the Potato Famine at age 2). Harry graduated from University of Michigan. He married Ida Ridgway Hair (daughter of Benjamin Morton Hair and Harriette Ridgway) on October 22, 1904 in Evanston, Cook County, IL. Harry was a steel executive of the American Steel & Wire Company in Chicago among other things. He died on October 18, 1941 while watching a Northwestwern-Michigan football game.
