Marian R. Steele 96, formerly of 29 East Church St., died June 16th in Midlothian, VA, where she was living with her daughter.

She was born February 11, 1913 in her home at 29 East Church St, the daughter of Rufus William and Carrie Belle Peach, Ripley. She graduated from Adams High School in 1931. She attended Boston University and graduated in 1935 with a BS degree in Education.

She married Duncan Macfarlane Chalmers, MD August 16, 1932 in Adams, they lived in various states during his internship, they spent two years in the Adams area. Marian stayed in Adams to care for her parents, and in 1941 she and her husband divorced.
On February 3, 1944 she married R. Frank Steele in Adams, and they took over his familys business, the Adams Electric Light Co. Mr. Steele died April 10, 1989 in Rochester.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol V. Chalmers of Midlothian, VA; a son, Rufus W. Chalmers of Henderson; 4 grandchildren.

She was a member and former trustee of the Adams Village Baptist Church, a former member of the Adams Presbyterian Church, served as a trustee of Elmwood Cemetery, a member of the Henderson Harbor Yacht Club, served for 13 years on the College Council at Oswego University, in the Ladies Group of American Baptist Women, and has been a trustee of the Historical Association of South Jefferson since it was organized.

It was on April 10, 2003 that Mrs. Steele left her home at 29 East Church St. to the Historical Association. The 25+ room, brick house was built in 1852 and has been in the Ripley family since 1883. Following a year of renovations the Ripley House Museum officially opened in August 2004.

Her hobbies included raising Morgan Horses, doing genealogy research and she enjoyed reading.

A Memorial Service will be 11:00AM Thursday, September 10th, at the Adams Village Baptist Church with Rev. Bud Masters officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, there will be no calling hours.

Local arrangements are with the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.
