TAHLEQUAH, Ok -- Jack Brown was born May 3, 1887 near Marble City, Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory, the son of John Brown and Sally Mackey.

He attended schools in the area and graduated from the Cherokee Male Seminary where he served as Captain of Company D and Battalion Major. He later graduated from Northeastern State College.

He began a teaching career at the Male Seminary in 1906. He taught in the Stilwell School System and also at the following schools: Armstrong Academy, Nuyacka, and Euchee Boarding Schools and then became superintendent of the Sequoyah Orphan Training School from which he retired in 1953, after having spent 46 years in service to the Indian Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs.

He was an original enrollee on the Dawes Commission Cherokee Rolls.

He joined the Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries Students and Teacher Association in 1924; he served them as Executive Vice-President for 28 years and as President for several more years.

He was also a charter member of the Tahlequah Kiwanis Club, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Tahlequah Chamber of Commerce, and the Cherokee National Historical Society.

He was also active in the United Fund of Tahlequah, and served as President of the local American Cancer Society Chapter.

He received his 32nd Degree as a Mason from the McAlester Consistory in 1915 and became a member of the Shriner's Bedouin Temple in Muskogee in 1945.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, joining when he was a student at the Male Seminary in 1906. He served as an Elder for many years being ordained in 1925 and also served in the Presbytery in many ways. Jack was awarded Oklahoma's "Outstanding Older American" honor in 1980.

He was preceeded in death by one son, Jack, and also his wife of 68 years, Nola Leflore Brown.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs . Marion Hagerstrand, and her husband, Col. Martin Hagerstrand, of Tahlequah. Two grandchildren: Nola Kirk and Jack Hagerstrand of Tulsa. A half-brother, Sequoyah Brown of Tulsa; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held August 4, 1987 in the First Presbyterian Church of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Officiating was Rev. Jimmie Thomas, Pastor ~ Dr. Ron Phillips, Choir Director.

Pallbearers: Cecil Shipp (Seq.Cls'54), Bob Cumsey (Seq.Cls'41), Steve McLemore, Goodlow Proctor (Seq.Cls'47), Amon Baker (Seq.Cls'48), And Bill Trott (Seq.Cls'46). All are former former students or employees of Sequoyah Indian School.

Honorary Pallbearers: Bob Cunningham, Owen Grant, Paul Grover, Jack Kaufman, Ted Olsen, Malcolm Queton, Diamond Roach (Seq. Supt 1950s-60s.) and Lemuel Sanders (Seq.Cls'45).

Burial followed in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.
