LaWanda J. “Meme” Hicks, 76, died Oct. 24, 2014, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Altus, Okla., to Ernest and Edna (Clark) Burgett. She married Max L. Hicks in 1983, in Wichita. He died Dec. 8, 2005. LaWanda was a member of the Eastern Star and was the founder of the Deaf Club and hosted meetings and dinners for the deaf community.

Survivors include: her son, Otis “Butch” Ramsey and his girlfriend, Kathy Wright, Partridge; seven step-children; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnny Burgett, and Bill Burgett, both of Shawnee, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, and a sister.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Jim Rhaesa presiding. There will be an interpreter at the service for the hearing impaired. Burial will be at the Partridge Cemetery, Partridge. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to the LaWanda Hicks Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Chapel, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
