John McCleary graduated from West Point in July 1854 and served before and through the Civil War, a 2nd Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, and Captain, 6th United States Infantry. He was honored by brevet to Major in July 1863 for his bravery at Gettysburg, which is where his title comes from.
