Solomon was born in Illinois but exactly where is unknown. Older family genealogies name Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois. And although his family lived there, briefly, after leaving Ohio by the 1820 census count the George and Barbara Hand family are located in the North of West Township, White County, Illinois.

Solomon Hand and Mary Ann Pearson were married on 10 October 1839 in McLean County, Illinois. They were the parents of seven children: Mary Elizabeth, Amanda ‘Mandy,’ Alfred S., Barbara A., Katherine ‘Katie,’ George W., and Charles Bergk.

Solomon is recognized by the Humboldt Historical Society as one of the pioneer settlers of Hands Grove Township. He was one of the very first white men to enter and settle this part of the country, spending his first winter here (1854-1855) in a cave on the banks of the East Des Moines River. He brought his family from McLean County the following year. Along with his brothers George Washington Hand and William Fletcher Hand they quickly immersed themselves in pioneer life.

The story of how he lost both hands and feet due to frostbite during the winter of 1856-1857 is well-known to descendants. It was a devastating outcome for a man in his prime with a family to provide for and whose spirit of adventure displayed so much promise. By all accounts his family perservered and Solomon himself must have been a man of enormous courage and fortitude.

Through the assistance of Martha Schmidt of the Humboldt County Historical Society, we have been able to determine that Solomon died at Homer, Dakota County, Nebraska, and that it is believed his body was returned to home where he was buried in Hands Grove Township, Humboldt county, Iowa.

There has been great effort on the part of local volunteers to locate and document every possible grave in Humboldt county; and although a small burial ground in Hands Grove Township has been located, there is not one single headstone remaining, with the only evidence of the location of graves as depressions in the ground.

It is believed that this burial ground is the final resting place of Solomon Hand.
