Omar Truman Burleson

U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Cumberland University Tennessee, in 1929, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Gorman, Texas. He was the Jones County Attorney, (1931-34), judge of Jones County, (1934-40), special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, (1940-41), secretary to Congressman Sam Russell of Texas, (1941-42) and general counsel for the Housing Authority, District of Columbia. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S.Navy, with service in the South Pacific Theater, (1942-46). In 1947, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress and reelected to the fifteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1978. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 85.
