He was born on July 15, 1919, in Adams, Minn., son of Martin and Christina (Gurvin) Epland. He married Maxine Peterson on Nov. 25, 1948, at LeRoy (Minn.) Lutheran Church.

Following his high school graduation in 1937, he attended Hamilton Business School, Mason City, Iowa, and was employed at Rath Packing Co. until he was drafted into the Army on May 5, 1941. He served overseas until Oct. 5, 1945. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in November 1949. He was executive director of the YMCA of Dubuque from 1959 until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 38 years, and active in many other community organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Pearl, Cora, Marion and Sadie; and three brothers, Bernie, Clarence and Ed.
