Mankiewicz will be best remembered for his emotional statement notifying the nation of Kennedy's death in Los Angeles on June 6, 1968. Born Frank Fabian Mankiewicz, into a Jewish family, his father was Herman J. Mankiewicz (co-writer of "Citizen Kane", 1941 with Orson Welles), his uncle was film director Joseph L. Mankiewicz ("All About Eve", 1950), Frank was raised in Beverly Hills. He studied at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and later served with the United States Army during World War II. Stationed in Europe, he saw action in the "Battle of the Bulge". Upon his return home, he enrolled at UCLA and later attained his Master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University. In 1955, he added a Law degree from the University of California at Berkeley to his academic accomplishments and practiced in his native Beverly Hills. After John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960, Mankiewicz became associated with the administration and was appointed Director of the Peace Corps Operations in Latin America. In 1972, he served as campaign director for US Senator and Presidential Candidate George McGovern. Not long after, the country found itself reeling in the midst of the "Watergate" scandal and as a result, he authored the books "Perfectly Clear: Nixon From Whittier to Watergate" (1973) and "US Vs Richard M. Nixon: The Final Crisis" (1975). On other subjects, he penned "With Fidel" (1976) and "Remote Control: Television and the Manipulation of American Life" (1978). From 1977 until 1983, he served as president of National Public Radio. At the time of his death, he was married to novelist Patricia O'Brien. He died of complications from heart failure.
