Alexander was a son of William Bookless and his first wife, Ann Cartmell. Alexander married Sarah Jane Whitted; a daughter of Jonathan Whitted and his first wife, Nancy R. Clark. Alexander and Sarah celebrated their wedding on March 25, 1846 in Indiana. They had at least three children. Sarah Jane passed away in May of 1854. Alex married a second time on September 11, 1856 in Parke County, Indiana; to Sarah Ann Guisinger. They had five children, all girls.
