Stephen P. Holmes, 81, of Falmouth, who leaves family in Bourne, died October 23 after a long illness.
He was married to Jacqueline R. (Rock) Holmes for 53 years.
Mr. Holmes was born in Newton, the son of the late Reginald and Selma (Johnson) Holmes. A veteran of the US Army, he served in an explosive detonation unit during the Korean War.
His father founded the family’s plumbing business in 1931. Mr. Holmes owned and operated the business alongside his brother, Philip, following his service.
He was actively involved in many boards and committees in Newton, and played a key role in raising funds for the construction of the Newton Senior Center.
In 1988, Mr. Holmes moved to Falmouh, where he was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three children, Stephen P. Holmes Jr. and his partner, Richard Keegan, of Bourne, Susanne M. Holmes and her husband, David Ferzoco, of West Newton, and Kevin M. Holmes and his wife, Marianne Holmes, of East Falmouth; four grandchildren, Tyler Holmes, Zachary Franklin, and Nick and Lisa Ferzoco; a brother, Philip R. Holmes of Pocasset; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 26, from 1 to 4 PM at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 27, at 10 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Highway.
Burial with military honors will follow in the Saint Anthony’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Senior Citizens Fund of Newton, 345 Walnut St., Newtonville MA 02460.
