Dubuque Telegraph Herald Wednesday May 6, 1925
Lois[sic] O. Gurnee, well known resident of this city and veteran hotel man, was called by death at the home, 1087 Main Street, Wednesday morning at 7:30 o'clock. Although Mr. Gurnee had been ailing for the past few months his condition did not become critical until Tuesday.
He was born in Indiana September 5, sixty-five years ago and came to this city twenty years ago. For ten years he was proprietor of the Paris hotel and after leaving this city he went to Wichita, Kansas, where he purchased the Hamilton holte[sic] which he operated for a period of four years. After leaving Wichita the family moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where for four years Mr. Gurnee was propietor[sic] of a hotel. For years ago he purchased the Delano hotel in urlington[sic], Iowa. He resided in that city until a year ago when he sold his hotel moving back to Dubuque where he had since been a resident.
Mr. Gurnee was a successful businessman and had been one of the leading hotel men in the middle west. Being a man of genial disposition and always fair in his dealings he was admired by all who knew him. His death brings deep sorrow not only to the grief-stricken family which is left to mourn his passing but by countless friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
Besides his beloved wife, Mr. Gurnee is survived by a son, L. Glenn Gurnee, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Mrs. J.W. Canfield, Gloria and Phyllis Wilson and Glenrose Gurnee, also two sisters, Mrs. Lou Curtis of Spencer, Iowa and Mrs. Lucinda Moore, of Oneida, Illinois.
The remains are lying in state at Hoffman's chapel, Central avenue at Fifteenth street, from where they may be viewed anytime after Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The funeral will be held Friday morning from Hoffman chapel to St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
