He married Leila Ella Venable, daughter of daughter of William Richard Venable and Sarah Cornelia Hoyt, on 12 Feb 1896 at First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA. Dr. Jack grew up at "Afton", went to school and lived in Richmond. He practiced medicine in Birmingham, where his brothers owned a foundry. After he married Leila Venable they lived in Atlanta, where he was a highly respected surgeon. "Afton" is built on an original grant of land to Col. William Hardin Perkins, Jack's great grandfather. He was a member of the first faculty of University College of Medicine; 1894 photo in Virginia Dabney's "Richmond - The Story of A City." In 1897 he represented Virginia in the 12th convention of the International Association of Surgeons in Moscow. For many years Dr. Ellis spent his vacations at "Afton" and gave freely of his professional skill to many Buckingham relatives and neighbors. He died without issue.
