The 1900 U.S. Federal Census places Josiah Conley [abt age 9] in Bible Grove Township, Clay County, Illinois with his parents, James and Lelitia [Letitia] Conley. Siblings in the household were: Pheoby [Phoebe] E., Isavilla N. J., Hariett L., Josiah, Gowd (Gould) Conley.

Around 1910, Letitia Ann Smith Conley was committed to a state psychiatric hospital. It is believed she was sent to the Kankakee State Hospital in Kankakee, Kankakee, Illinois, USA. The 1910 U.S. Federal Census could not be found for the Kankakee State Hospital.

HUSBAND, JAMES M. CONLEY

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census places James M. Conley in his sister's household in Grant Township, Custer County, Oklahoma, USA. Vinoa "Vina" Ellen Conley Graus was living with her husband, Frank, and their three children: Harold, Ruby and Ralph Graus. The Marital Status of James Conley is listed as DIVORCED on the census report and he was working as a farm laborer. If anyone in the Conley family knows what happened to James, please contact this writer.

DAUGHTER, HARIETT L. CONLEY

Hariett would have been about 24 years of age at this time. It is unknown if she was married or to whom. If anyone in the Conley family knows what happened to Hariett, please contact this writer.

SON, JOSIAH ARTHUR CONLEY

Josiah was about 18 years of age at this time. Josiah was sent to live with his Uncle William Conley and his wife, Nancy Ann Ooten Conley. The 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Deer Creek Township, Custer County, Oklahoma confirms his presence in the household. He remained with his aunt and uncle until his marriage to Anna Elizabeth Chastain around 1914.

SON, GOULD CONLEY

Gould was about 11 years of age. The 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Phoebe Conley Hanks tells us she was living on Maple Street, Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois with her husband, Thomas P. Hanks, along with her daughter, Alice Hanks, who was born on January 13, 1909. Her brother, Gould Conley was also living in the household. Phoebe died on July 8, 1914 after a prolonged illness of tuberculosis. Thomas Price Hanks was 67 years of age, with a daughter of his own about the age of 5 or 6. Icy Conley Young [sister of Phoebe, Josiah and Gould], lived in Neoga with her husband, Ulysses Grant Young. She had four children of her own to care for [ages: 8, 6, 4, and 1 month]. Icy was still getting over the loss of a child on September 22, 1913, at the age of 6 months and 28 days. She also had a four year old that required special needs. I am sure it was with a sad heart that Gould Conley was sent out west to be cared for by other members of the Conley family.

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census places Josiah Conley [abt age 18] in Deer Creek Township, Custer County, Oklahoma in his Uncle William Conley's household. Present in the household were: William and his wife, Nancy Conley, along with their children: Jesse M., Leroy G., Nellie May, and Hazel C. Conley. Josiah is listed as a nephew of William and Nancy Conley. Josiah was working for his uncle as a farm laborer. The census tells us his father and mother were both born in Illinois. Josiah is able to read and write.

About 1914, Josiah Arthur Conley married Anna Elizabeth Chastain. They were blessed with five children.
