William was only 12 when he crossed the ocean with his family. His father was a coal miner and William and his brothers worked in the mines with him. In 1840 the family was converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and 14 years later they were able to take their family to America . Due to the necessity of having to earn money to complete their trip west, they lived first in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania , and two years later moved to Peoria, Illinois . William and his brother Robert and their father worked in the mines until 1858 when they bought wagons and equipment and moved on to Omaha . There they joined a wagon train. William , at 18, was chosen to provide meat for the wagon train. Upon their arrival in the Valley, they went on to Kaysville where they stayed a year. In 1870 they finally moved to Hooper where they made their home. William homesteaded land and bought other land and became a farmer. He also raised stock. He later planted an orchard of 7500 fruit trees, apples, prunes and pears.
