"Mother's Day in Olustee Baptist Church" Today it is the Old Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. B.C. Gay lived about one and a half miles south of Olustee Church. They moved there from Georgia, before the Civil War, and furnished four sons for the Southern Army, one of which never returned, giving his life for the South. The other three returned and made good members of the Olustee Church. Her son Lewis was a deacon in the Olustee Church, and lived to be over 90 years of age. When I pastor of Olustee, in 1893 Mother Gay died in the home if her son, Hubert who lived near Trenton, Florida. I as pastor got the word to be at Olustee Church one afternoon, for the body of Mother Gay was being brought for burial. I waited there till dark, then it was suggested I come back next morning which I did and we buried Mother Gay, one of the best Church Mother's Olustee ever had. Her body had been brought by private conveyance and did not arrive till sometime during the night. Her body was placed in the Church house she had lived so well and long; and loved ones stayed with the Angels near her body the balance of that night and next morning, the last words were said at the grave of one of the best Church Mothers, Olustee was ever blessed with. That has been 48 years ago, but now when I think of that time, angels are near.
