Porfirio E. Martinez, Sr. of Austin, age 92, born September 15, 1913 passed away March 24, 2006.

Preceded in death by his father Fernando Martinez, mother Rafaela Martinez, sisters Maria Serrato and Guadalupe Martinez.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 1/2 years, Noami Perez Martinez; children, Ester Garza Torres, Yolanda Mexquitic, Juanita and Ronald Goodrich of Rock Island, Ill., Porfirio and Vicki Martinez, Jr., Andres and Rosa Martinez of Beeville, Texas, Margarita and Jesus Prieto, Rodolfo and Jan Martinez of Ben Brook, Texas; brother, Zaragosa and Marcos Martinez, Sr.; sister, Lily Martinez; uncle, Juan Escamilla; 34 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and loving family members.

He served in the US Army during WWII in Co B 99th Chemical Mortar Battalion as Ammunition Bearer at the Battle of Rhineland Rome-Arno. He received the Good Conduct Medal with clasp, Distinguished Unit Badge and Service R Ribbon and three bronze service stars.

In his lifetime Mr. Martinez was a cook specializing in Mexican food. At one time he co-owned Spanish Village and then he went on to cook for La Fiesta restaurants from where he retired. Among family and friends he was known for his excellent rice and enchiladas, and tamales during Christmas.

Serving as pallbearers are grandsons Willie Sanchez III, John Albert Casarez, Sr, Jason Martinez, William Martinez, Joseph Martinez, and Jeremy Garza. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters.

Visitation was Tuesday, March 28th from 12:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Services South location at 4360 S. Congress Ave. On Wednesday, March 29th visitation was at the North location at 8507 N. IH-35. A Rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. at the north location.

Burial services were Thursday, March 30th at 10:00 a.m. at All Faiths North followed by burial at Assumption Cemetery. [Published in the Austin American-Statesman on 3/28/2006.]
