Mr. Prator served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman second class. He moved to Anchorage in 1943. After serving on the Anchorage Merchant Patrol 1946-48, he became an Anchorage police officer in 1951 and retired as a lieutenant in 1971. Mr. Prator then worked as a security guard for NANA Corp. on the North Slope 1974-77.

Mr. Prator was the first homesteader on Prator Lake, which was named after him in 1952.
