Robert W. Dawson “Sheriff Bob”, 90, of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 20, 2014 surrounded by his family.

Bob was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 9, 1924, the son of Leland Wayne and Lillian Opal (Hancock) Dawson. After high school he attended Drake University and the American Institute of the Air studying Radio Broadcasting. He served his country in the Army during World War Two as an Artillery Sgt when he received the Bronze Star. Bob married Hazel Britson Nov. 9, 1943; she preceded him in death in 1980. He married Margaret Boettcher on September 26, 1982; she preceded him in death February 27, 1995.

Throughout the years Bob worked a variety of jobs. Following the war, he worked as the morning DJ at KCBC and as an on-air announcer at KGTV in Des Moines. He later moved to Eau Claire where he worked at WEAU for 24 years, then in public relations at the Consumer Coop for 11 years. He worked for a short time at Luther Hospital and he served on the Eau Claire County Board for several years. Bob had many freelance projects, and was working on a current project till the day he died.

Bob is best remembered for hosting a children’s show, The Sheriff Bob Show, on WEAU TV from 1955-1978. His quick wit and his gregarious personality afforded him great success and popularity.

He was a member of George B. Wheeler Lodge #351 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Eau Claire, York Rite, Zor Temple, Madison and Mehara Shrine Club. Bob was honored by the Masonic Fraternity by receiving the 33rd Degree.

Bob was a giver. He also gave his time and talent as a member of Eau Claire Kiwanis and the Kiwanis Golden K. Bob was also a charter member of the I. O.T.W. A. He visited many children in the hospital over the years. The kids loved his cowboy persona.

Bob enjoyed going up to Lake Holcombe with his good friends, the Bergs. He was an avid golfer for many years. Bob will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and a host of fans from several generations.

Survivors include, his children: Deborah Calhoun, of New Brighton, MN and Robert (Debra Palm) Dawson, of Fond du lac; his grandchildren: Daniel Calhoun and Paige Calhoun, also of New Brighton; and his longtime friend, Doris Hager.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; and his son-in-law, Garry Calhoun.
