(formerly Sister Mary Edward Ann)

First Profession July 28, 1960
Motherhouse
Mequon, Wisconsin

Devoted niece of Sister Rosemary Hendricks, SSND; and Sister Lucy Hendricks, SSND.

School Sister of Notre Dame Helen Hendricks died on October 20, 2014 at Notre Dame of Elm Grove in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. She was 75.

Born in De Pere, Wis. on April 16, 1939, to Edward and Kathryn (Vander Heyden) Hendricks, she was baptized Helen Mary at St. Mary Church in De Pere. She was their third child. Helen's desire to become a sister happened when she was seven and entered St. Mary's School. She called it "love at first sight" when she met her SSND teacher. Following her grade school graduation, she entered the SSND aspiranture at St. Mary's Academy in Prairie du Chien, Wis. As a novice, Helen received the religious name Mary Edward Ann but she later returned to her baptismal name. She professed her first vows on July 38, 1960. Sister Helen earned a bachelor's degree with a major in sociology and a minor in English from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee in 1969.

Sister Helen served as a teacher of primary students for 42 years. Her first teaching assignment was with second grade students at St. Aloysius, West Allis, Wis. Her second mission was at St. Joseph, Escanaba, Mich. All of her other schools were in Wisconsin at: St. Peter, Beaver Dam; Holy Name, Sheboygan; St. Joseph, Black River Falls; St. Nicholas, Freedom; St. Stanislaus, Berlin; Mother of Perpetual Help, Milwaukee; Holy Trinity, Oconto; and St. Louis, Dykesville. Upon retirement from teaching in 2004, Sister Helen did community service for eight years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent in Mount Calvary, Wis. When Mount Carmel closed in 2012, she moved to St. Joseph Convent in Green Bay, Wis., offering her services to the parish as a catechist and choir member. Health issues necessitated a move to Grancare Nursing Center where she resided until the time of her death. Sister Helen will be greatly missed by her religious community, family and friends. She blessed everyone by her ready smile and loving spirit.

Sister Helen is survived by her sisters and brother: Bernice (Leon) Jansen, Al (Mary) Hendricks, Florence Demeny, Sandy Palmer, Carrol (Mike) Toneys, Barbara Mott (Mark Fischer), Diane (Ron) Neault, many nieces, nephews and dear friends and the SSND Community. Memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, c/o SSND Mission Advancement Office, 13105 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove, WI 53122-2291.
