Howard M. Smith, 75, passed away at his home on Depot St., East Wareham, Friday, after a long period of ill health. He was the son of the late Hanford B. and Anna (Hall) Smith, and was a native and life-long resident of East Wareham.
He was a conductor for the New Bedford & Onset St. Railway Co., and worked for the telephone company for a while before starting his own business as building mover and mason. He was a well known musician and was always in demand at minstrel shows. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Besides his widow, Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Howard M. Smith Jr., of Williamsburg, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. John H. Ackerman of Wareham; two sisters, Mrs. William G. Cowell of Wareham and Mrs. Frank E. Taft of Winchendon, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the East Wareham Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Elliott, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the family lot at Agawam cemetery.
