MARBLEHEAD - Melvin E. Bailey, 58, of 14 Dartmouth Rd., Marblehead, died Wednesday afternoon in the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, following an illness of several months. He was the husband of Marion (Sweeney) Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was born in Marblehead, the son of the late Fred and Mary Ellen (Mahoney) Bailey. He was employed for the past 26 years as a display carpenter for Wm. Filene's of Boston. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Corps of Engineers and was a past commander of the American Legion Post 32, of Marblehead, and the Marblehead Post VFW.

He was a member of the Market Square Associates and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 878.

Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 brothers, Norman L. Bailey of Marblehead and Dr. John H. Bailey of Benton Harbor, Mich., a sister, Miss Dorcas Bailey of Marblehead and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, Marblehead, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.
