The community of Kent, Oklahoma welcomed Joyce Branton on April 29,1928 the daughter of Horace Branton and Clara (Bailey) Branton.
She was raised in a family of her five brothers and two sisters and throughout the years gained several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews whom she loved dearly. She graduated from Soper School in 1946. After graduation, she worked at the Jordan Bus Company and at the Tastee Freeze in Hugo, Oklahoma where she met Hoyt Smith and later married on September 29, 1956. They soon moved to Panola, Oklahoma where Hoyt took an administrator's position. They lived there until 1962 when they moved to Soper. Joyce worked in the home taking care of her 2 children until they graduated high school. She also worked as a secretary to Hoyt as he was an administrator.
In 1976, Joyce began working at the Choctaw County Court House in the Election Board Office until she retired in 1994 and continued working elections as an Election Inspector at Soper local elections until Fall of 2013. During the past seven years she enjoyed managing the Soper Senior Citizens Center until she became too ill to work. For several years, Joyce attended the Soper First Baptist Church and later changed her membership to join her family at Kent First Baptist Church.
Joyce was a member of the Eastern Star, the Soper Literary Club, and participated in several fundraisers throughout the years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, working elections, and talking on the phone to family, friends, and neighbors. She loved to help people in the community and often cooked and delivered meals to others in need during special times.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE: one son: Kent Smith and wife Audie of Haworth; one daughter, Barbara Wiginton of Colbert, OK; one brother, Joe Branton and wife, Frances of Hugo; grandchildren, Bryan Wiginton and wife, Ashley; Jody Wiginton and wife, Katie; Brent Smith and wife Rachael; and Kayla Smith; great grandchild: Blake Wiginton and one on the way-Tyler Hoyt Wiginton; numerous nieces and nephews along with many other relatives and friends.
