She attended school in Idaho and Washington and graduated from Kuna High in 1946. She married Alan Glen Newby on August 10, 1946, in a ceremony performed by her father-in-law Bishop Ulrick Glynne Newby. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Verna lived the majority of her life on a farm in the Kuna area. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She served in the Primary, Relief Society and as a nursery and Cub Scout leader. Mom worked in the extraction program, served a temple mission for the Boise LDS Temple and was ward librarian. Verna was called to serve a mission to Leeds, England with her best friend Gayle Robinson. Her last calling was to represent her ward at Threads of Gold. Mom loved the gospel with all her heart, and knew the importance it had in our lives and she wanted to share that with everyone she met.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, doing genealogy and crocheting and she made beautiful afghans and doilies. She also loved traveling with her sisters. Her greatest joy was her family, and she loved spending time with them.
Survivors include five children, Joseph (and Helena) Newby of Meridian, ID; Christine (and Rod) Warfield; Debbie Taysom and Tom Goff; Calvin (and Joan) Newby; Richard (and Dawndee) Newby all of Kuna; four sisters: Dixie Winston; Ruby (and Russell) Johnson; Pearl (and John) Noble and Margie (and Deloy) Armstrong; two brothers: Vernal (Hun) Holladay and Glen (Joy) Holladay. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Glen Newby, a son, Alfred Alan Newby, four brothers, Parnell, Lamar, Jack and Joseph Holladay; three sisters Vidella and Donna Jean Holladay, and Lillie Hower, and her parents.
Funeral services will be Jan. 24, 2006 in the LDS Chapel at Kuna. Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
