Montgomery Newton ("Mont") Atteberry was the son of Thomas E. Atteberry and Judith E. Remington.

He married Emma B. Harr, daughter of Ruden L. Harr and Eliza B. Piper, on August 3, 1912, in Custer County, Oklahoma; they were married until his death. The couple had three children, two daughters and a son, namely:

OPAL LEOTA (ATTEBERRY) [CONWAY] STEWART (1913-1992),
ALFRED NED ATTEBERRY (1915-2002), and
LENA MAY (ATTEBERRY) [FORD] [DELK] MATTHEWS (1918-2010).

"Death of M. N. Atteberry
Mont Newton Atteberry was born in Logan county, Ill., March 18, 1891, and died at the age of 26 [sic-27] years, 7 months and 7 [sic-22 days] days. He died last Saturday as the result of pneumonia. He was married August 3rd, 1912, to Emma Harr. To this union 3 children were born, Opal Leota age 5 yrs, Alfred Ned age 3 yrs, [and] Mabel Lena age 6 months. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife and children, his mother Judith E. Atteberry and father Thomas E. Atteberry; his brothers Paul Atteberry now in France, Austin Atteberry, [and] Thomas Atteberry; and his sisters Mrs. Lulu Hanson, living at Texhoma, Okla., [and] Mrs. Pearl Cooper living at Weatherford, Okla. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the house by Rev. L. L. Shaw. Interment took place at Hydro. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the community which grieves with them on account of his untimely death."

On his World War I Draft Registration, Montgomery Atteberry's date of birth was listed as March 18, 1891, which corroborates the date of birth listed in the obituary and on his headstone. In his obituary, which appeared on Thursday, November 14, 1918, it was stated that he "died last Saturday", which would have been November 9, 1918, the date that is engraved on his headstone. Using these dates of birth and death, his age at death was calculated to be 27 years, 7 months, and 22 days.
