ISAAC MARION NORTON was born September 8, 1832 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, one of two sons born to Fielder Norton and Hannah Brown. Isaac, along with his family moved from South Carolina through Georgia and settled in Cherokee County, Alabama, before 1850. It was in Cherokee County that Isaac met Julia Powers (1841-1911) and married her sometime before 1860.
When the war started, Isaac was living in Cherokee County, Alabama, where he joined the 47th Infantry of Alabama, Company E on August 13, 1862. He was shot in the left arm during the 2nd Battle of Manassas. Upon joining the military, he left behind a daughter, and his wife who was with child. His son would be born on September 27, 1862.
After he was paroled at the end of the war, he returned to his home in Cherokee County, Alabama, where he and Julia added 7 more children to their family. Of their nine children, eight were raised to adulthood, the ninth having died in childhood. In the years before his death, he made his home in Forney, Cherokee County, Alabama.
