A noted biochemist and author, he attended Colgate University , continuing his education at BU and received degrees of Bachelor of Arts in 1923, Master of Arts in 1924, Doctor of Philosophy in 1926 and Doctor of Medicine in 1934. He was associated with Boston University School of Medicine for 30 years. He received the 10th Annual Outstanding Alumnus Award of BU School of Medicine in 1964.

He was author and co-author of 65 books, contributed over 65 individual papers to a wide variety of national and international medical and scientific journals from 1926 through 1957.
Dr. Walker also was Associate Pathologist of the Leominster Hospital, Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital and Burbank Hospital, as well as consultant in pathology at Community Memorial Hospital in Ayer.

In 1982, Isaac Asimov, writer of over 217 books on science fiction, history and popular science, gave his lecture "The Future is Here" at Fitchburg State College.

There is a scholarship in his name at Fitchburg State University: the "Dr. Burnham Walker Memorial Scholarship" awarded to a full-time student majoring in Biology, Chemistry or Nursing.
