American born physicist, he obtained 129 patents, of products and electrical devices. He was George Westinghouse's chief engineer at his Pittsburg factory. In 1885 he built the first practical alternating current device. In 1890 he founded the Stanley Electric Manufacturing Co., in Pittsfield, Ma.
