Margaret C. McAuley age 1, daughter of Henry and Eliza (Ritchey) McAuley, was born in Wisconsin, most likely in Grant County. She is enumerated with her parents of the 1850 census in that place. On the 1860 Census she is named Carthagenia McAuley, age 11 and born in WI. Her mother Eliza has died in 1852, and she is enumerated with the same siblings and her father Henry and step-mother Rebecca. On the 1870 Census she is enumerated as Cartha McAuley, age 20 and born in WI , with some of the same siblings and her father Henry, who is widowed, and not yet married for the third and final time.
On 17 Oct. 1871, Carthagenia McAuley married John Henry Luth in De Soto, Vernon, Wisconsin.
After examining and weighing many primary documents, two conclusions were reached; her proper full name was Margaret Carthagenia McAuley although she went most commonly by Carthagenia or Cartha, and she was born in 1849, not 1851.
Her death certificate in 1935, and her tombstone both state her birth year was 1851, and the informant was her son Vernon Claire Luth, which should be trustworthy. However, the 1850 census finds her a living breathing one-year-old girl named Margaret C., and each census year thereafter saw her age increase by 10 years and her name evolve from Margaret C., to Carthagenia, and then Cartha, which is consistent and logical. Her name "Margaret" is a family name and she herself shared with her family that her name Carthagenia came from her scholarly father's respect for the Carthaginians. Carthagenia Luth is engraved on her tombstone with the dates 1851-1935, but her family record will state 1849-1935.
