Born in 1918 (the exact date is not sure though) he was the youngest of four sons of Sheik Sultan I, who ruled in 1909.
Zayed was given the task of guiding oil company teams around the empty dessert and with his help, the city is now thriving with a 200,000.
The first European visitor to Sheik Zayed was Edward Henderson, who commented: "He was handsome, with humoros and intelligent eyes, of presence and dressed and clearly a man of action and resolution."
