Henry Schuette, A Local Builder, Died Last Friday
Funeral Service Held in One Of the Many Structures Deceased Erected
WAS 81 YEARS OF AGE

On Friday evening, April 12, 1929, Henry Schuette, an old and highly respected citizen of this city, passed away at Postville Hospital where he had been a patient the last nine months.

He was born in Munderloh, Oldenburg, Germany, September 16, 1848, the first child born to Mr. and Mrs. John Schuette. Soon after birth he was baptized and became a member of the Lutheran church. As a boy of four years he came with his parents to the United States, settling first at Grafton, Wis., where he received his education in the parochial school, and on April 13, 1862, he was confirmed by the Rev. F.A. Ahner, pastor of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran church of that city, thus becoming a communicant member of the church.

At the age of 17 years he became a carpenter’s apprentice, and the trade of carpenter was his occupation throughout a long and useful life. He became skilled in his trade and was for many years one of the best known contractors and builders in northeastern Iowa, and field of labor covering Clayton and several adjoining counties in which today stand many private and public buildings erected by his skill and direction, the church from which his funeral was held being one of said structures which will stand for years as a monument to his skill.

April 25, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Pupke of Garnavillo. They established their home in Garnavillo and resided there until 1893 when the family moved to Postville, which hs been their home continuously since, and where he followed his work as contractor until 1919, at which time he completed the residence for his son Henry J. in this city.

In 1923 it was the privilege of Mr. and Mrs. Schuette to celebrate their Golden Wedding with all of their children present.

Mr. Shcuette was known to all as an honest, upright and industrious citizen, who achieved a competence from his years of toil and was able to spend his declining years in comfort. He was a good citizen, neighbor and friend, who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his widow and three children – two daughters, Mrs. Anna Blaha of Monona and Mrs. Delia Stone of this city and one son, H.J. Schuette, also of this city. He is also survived by two brothers, John of Marion, Iowa, and Christ. Of Cedarburg, Wis.; and by two sisters, Mrs. Frederick Leisenberg of CedarBurg, Wis., and Mrs. Henry Baehr of Brickrell, Nebr. There are also three grandchildren as well ans many other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at two o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. E.T. Finck officiating. Interment in Postville cemetery.

Relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral were Mr.s F. Leisenburg of Cedarburg, Wis, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank V. Blaha and family of Monona.
