Shirley Ann Barts, 80, of Elkhart Lake, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice where she was a resident for a brief period of time. Shirley fought a courageous battle and died peacefully with her family at her side.
She was born on December 20, 1930, the daughter of the late Clarence and Anna Hopfengartner Springstube. She was born and raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin where she graduated from Lincoln High School. As a high school student she enjoyed working at the Tasty Krispy malt shop.
In 1988 she married her loving husband, Martin, and they resided in their log cabin outside of Howards Grove. Shirley worked at the Kohler Company and retired in 1992, after working 25 years in the engine plant. Shirley was also very proud that she had opened the first used book store in Sheboygan, The Book Boutique, in 1981, which is now owned and operated by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda. Shirley was also a volunteer at the St. Nicholas Hospital Gift Shop.
Shirley loved watching and feeding the birds, enjoyed her time at the casinos with her husband and friends, and enjoyed her two trips to Las Vegas. But most of all, she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. Her most cherished times were the 'cousin days', when the grandchildren would all gather and play at her house. Their fondest memories are of the days they played at grandmas, the many rides she would give them as teenagers (which Grandma always knew and understood was quality time with teens), and the endless hours she spent talking with them on the phone and through email, just being a good listener and offering her sage advice. Their most cherished memories are of Christmas at grandmas, which always included special gifts for everyone.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Martin; her 7 children, Michael (Linda) Frasch, Barbara (James) Horneck, Lori Schoen, (John Schoen), Steven Frasch (special friend, Christine Renzelman), Sandra Bauer, Susan (John) Born, Sharon Romenesko ( Joe Schwiner); 11 grandchildren, Angela (Heath) Carpenter, Daniel (Duste) Horneck and Stacy Horneck, Amanda and Whitney Frasch (special friend, Andrew Bunge), Bradley and Melissa Born, Justin and Eric Bauer and Nicholas and Megan Kunstman; 1 step-granddaughter, Michelle Prettie; 5 great-grandchildren, Kyle Carpenter, Sawyer Horneck, Derek and Felix Frasch, Oliver Kunstman; a sister and brother-in-law, Ron and Judy (Eppler) Jasper; four sisters-in-law, Laverne (Tom) Weber, Lucille (Melvin) Wilsing, Loretta (Gary) Fischer, Linda Grapentine, and LuAnne (Glen) Gerneniz; one brother-in-law, Marvin Barts and other friends.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Sheboygan where she was a member.
