Carolyn Spendlove Hinton, age 71, returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on October 17 at her home in Cedar City, Utah, after a valiant and courageous 32 month fight against bone marrow cancer and leukemia. Carolyn was born August 24, 1943 in Hurricane, Utah to Ianthus and Blanche M. Sullivan Spendlove, the fifth of six children. She married Wayne Kendall Hinton on April 30, 1960 in the St. George Temple.
Carolyn was raised and attended school in Hurricane, Utah, until moving to Cache County in 1960 to put her husband through Utah State University and to later help him obtain a Ph. D. from Brigham Young University. In high school, she participated in speech, drama, chorus and was on the high school Tigrettes marching team. Carolyn and Wayne finally settled in Cedar City in 1968 to raise their four children: Deborah, Julie Ann, Shawn Wayne, and Kyle Kendall.
The joys of Carolyn's life were being a wife, mother, grandmother, a friend and in serving. She served on the P.T.A. Council, the Cedar City Music Arts Council, the American Cancer Society, and was a long time member of the Les Livres Book Club.
Her employment included working for several retail merchants including: Kamelot Fabric,Tink's Superior Auto Parts and Christensen's Department Store. She also worked for the Utah Shakespearean Festival.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carolyn served in presidencies of ward and stake primary, young women and Relief Society organizations. She also served, with her husband as Church Education System Directors in the country of Sri Lanka, for two years on the Southern Utah Public Affairs Council, as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple and for two years in the Church History Library in Salt Lake City researching and writing in the special projects zone.
Carolyn is survived by her Husband, Wayne, four children: Deborah (Bruce) Gibson of Lexington, Kentucky, Julie Ann (Greg) Sanders of Cedar City, Shawn Wayne (Melissa) Hinton of St. George, Kyle Kendall (Jennifer) Hinton of Cedar City, and by nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Grace (Grant) Iverson of Washington, Utah, brother, Jerry (Ginger) Spendlove of South Jordan, Utah, sisters-in-law Marlee Spendlove of West Valley City, Cle Spendlove of St. George, Margene (Alma) Holt of Hurricane, Utah, Linda (Ralph) Rawlinson of Cedar City and by brother-in-law Raymond (Beverly) Hinton of Washington, Utah, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, lanthus and Blanche Spendlove, brothers Weston Spendlove, Mac Spendlove and Dennis Spendlove and by brothers-in-law: Robert John Hinton, Alan Hinton and Lynn Hinton and by her father and mother-in-law Wayne H. and Jean Kendall Hinton.
A viewing will be at the Southern Utah Mortuary located at 190 N. 300 W. Cedar City, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M, on Tuesday October 21 and from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday October 22. Funeral Services will be held in the Rock Church located at 75 E. Center Street in Cedar City at 11:00 A.M. A graveside service will be held in the Hurricane City Cemetery at 3:00 P. M. under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Cedar City Intermountain Huntsman Cancer Center and Dr. Derrick Haslem as well as Ethan Bunker and the staff of Alliance Hospice. Carolyn was most grateful for the loving care of her husband, family, her many friends and neighbors and to the Southern Utah Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, Carolyn requests that you contribute to the Huntsman Cancer Center or to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Perpetual Education Fund.
